TREO AWARE

TREO Foundation Awards Scholarships to Two ASMBS Pathway Students

TREO Foundation is proud to announce the winners of our first-ever TREO Pathway Scholarships, funded through TREO AWARE. This June, during the ASMBS Annual Meeting, high school students from the Washington D.C. area participated in the ASMBS Pathway Program — an initiative committed to inspiring and empowering students, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds, with a deeper understanding of obesity treatment, healthcare careers, and STEM opportunities.

As part of their experience, students were invited to take part in the “Walk Better Innovation Challenge” by TREO Foundation. Their task was to share ideas on how TREO Foundation’s The Walk could improve participation and fundraising. Submissions were reviewed by a task force of TREO board members, and two students were selected for their outstanding creativity and vision:

First Place – Bailey: Awarded a $1,000 scholarship
Second Place – Myles: Awarded a $500 scholarship

These scholarships are designed to support the students as they continue their educational journeys and represent TREO’s commitment to cultivating the next generation of healthcare leaders.

Sponsor a Student for 2026

Through TREO AWARE, our goal is to fully fund the Pathway Program next year for students in San Antonio, TX. You can make a difference by choosing to “Sponsor a Student” for the 2026 ASMBS Pathway Program.

Your donation will:
• Provide support for the students to attend the ASMBS program, as well as additional scholarships, like the TREO Pathway Scholarship
• Expand access to immersive, hands-on healthcare experiences
• Inspire curiosity and mentorship for young leaders in STEM and medicine

Together, we can ensure that no student is left behind as we build the future of healthcare.

To improve the Pathway Program for future students, we asked the winners to provided feedback on why they chose to participate.

Read on to see their responses.

Why did you choose to participate in the “Walk Better Innovation Challenge”?

“I chose to participate because the TREO foundation’s The Walk is an event that deserves more recognition and engagement. I wanted to help with that because obesity is something everyone should be informed about, and TREO’s The Walk is a great interactive way to do that. People need to understand obesity to understand their own health and situation, and respect the health and situations of others.”

“I decided to participate in the Innovation Challenge as I thought it would be a good way to highlight my ideas as well as apply for a scholarship. I like the idea of the Walk and I thought some of my ideas would increase the participation for the event.”

What does winning this TREO scholarship mean to you, and how will it benefit your education journey?

“This is my first scholarship and it has encouraged me to continue looking and applying for scholarships; also, it’s nice to have my ideas acknowledged.”

“Winning this scholarship means a lot to me because this is the first scholarship I have won. I’ve applied to a few scholarships before this and didn’t win, which has lowered my motivation. Winning this scholarship has boosted my motivation about college and scholarships tremendously! This scholarship will help pay for my college career, pursuing biomedical engineering.”
